Drumlanrig Castle, England — Fred Rodriguez added to Rock Racing’s string of top 10 results at the Tour of Britain with a sixth-place finish on Stage 7 Saturday.
Rodriguez was part of an eight-man breakaway that escaped the peloton early on in the 95-mile (153 km) race that began in Glasgow and finished in front of the Drumlanrig Castle in Scotland.
“My back is in a lot of pain and I’m basically not at a full capacity right now,” Rodriguez said.
Edvald Boasson Hagen (Team Columbia) won his third stage ahead of Matthew Goss (Team CSC-Saxo Bank) and Daryl Impey (Barloworld).
The overall standings remained unchanged: Geoffroy Lequatre (Agritubel) maintained his six-second advantage over Steve Cummings (Barloworld). Daniel Martin (Team Garmin-Chipotle presented by H30) is third, 14 seconds behind.
For the third time in the past four days, it was Rock Racing that was in the middle of the action – figuring prominently in a race-long breakaway. On Thursday’s Stage 5, Victor Hugo Pena rode to a fourth-place finish as part of five-man breakaway. On Stage 4, Santiago Botero was part of a 10-man move from which Boasson Hagen emerged to take his first stage win.
Sunday’s final stage is 68.5 miles (110 km) from Blackpool to Liverpool. It finishes with five laps of a 2.4-mile (3.86 km).
On Monday, the thousands of fans who have been lining the route all week to watch Rock Racing will get their chance to meet the team up close. A special autograph signing and meet-and-greet takes place at Harrods in London from 3 to 5 p.m. On hand will be U.S. road race champion Tyler Hamilton, U.S. criterium champion Rahsaan Bahati, past three-time U.S. road champion Fred Rodriguez, former world time trial champion Santiago Botero, Tour de France yellow jersey wearer Victor Hugo Pena, and Tour de France white jersey winner Oscar Sevilla. (Note: Rock Racing Team Owner Michael Ball will be unable to attend the engagement as previously announced.)
Harrods is selling Rock Racing’s commemorative “London Rocks” team kit, as well as two other Tour of Britain kits that the riders wore during the race. Additionally, a line of Rock Racing “London Rocks” sports apparel for men, women and children is also on available for purchase, along with a special edition of the commemorative Fuji SL 1 bicycle the team is racing on during the Tour of Britain.
